The Kids Edition of the Fire HD 8 offers good multimedia features paired with a reasonable warranty extension and additional content. Unfortunately, the used color space as well as the resolution remain quite low. The shipping giant has also made improvements to the display, giving the panel more luminosity and a better color display. The Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020) is also a successful improvement in the Kids Edition and features more power and memory as well as improved speakers. Those who prefer to connect headphones can use both the audio jack and USB-C. However, we would like to see a volume lock, especially for small children, in order to be able to limit the maximum level. The two stereo loudspeakers leave a good impression and are well suited for media playback. The surface temperatures are on a harmless level and in combination with the protective cover, there is practically no warming noticeable. For older children (8+), however, the Amazon App Store reaches its limits quite quickly, as many popular games or even learning apps from the Play Store cannot be found there. However, since the apps for the little ones are usually not very demanding, it is sufficient. In everyday use the performance is okay, but the system still shows jerkiness and the loading times of apps can take a moment. Technically, the Kids Edition of the Fire HD 8 does not differ from the normal version, so that a stable ac-WLAN can be used here as well, which is convincing in combination with our reference router Netgear Nighthawk AX12.Īs the test of the Fire HD 8 illustrates in more detail, the new edition of 2020 has been equipped with a powerful performance boost. Unfortunately there is still no way to do this for audio content. The access of the little ones can be limited by usage time accounts. Nothing has changed fundamentally on the kids' interface. The Kids Edition, however, comes with one year of FreeTime Unlimited free of charge, which gives the kids access to child-friendly apps, books and video content. As with the other Fire tablets, the surface is strongly tailored to the Amazon universe. The operating system used is Fire OS 7.3, which is strongly modified by Amazon and is based on Android 9.0 Pie. Unfortunately, the recycling code (07) of the cover does not allow any precise conclusions to be drawn about the material used. Should this not be the case, the two-year carefree warranty comes into effect, which provides for a repair or replacement of the tablet in case of accidental damage. It should protect the tablet from most falls. The cover is made of a kind of foam, which is flexible but still quite solid. The plastic stand integrated into the Bumper can only be locked in one position, but this allows two set-up positions and is perfectly adequate for everyday use. Colorful accents are set by the colorful bumper covers, which are available in blue, pink and purple. The tablet of the Kids Edition is always the black version. Purely optically, the case of the Fire HD 8 has hardly changed compared to its predecessor. You can read more in-depth technical analyses in the Fire HD 8 in-depth review. The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition is a standard Fire HD 8 tablet, which is supplemented by additional services and a special protective case.
